The original is in a giant ledger book, all handwritten by Mell Barnes or his assistant. The ledger starts in 1887 and ends in 1896, about the time Mell Barnes left Milan to take over the Stimpson Scales manufacturing plant in Elkhart, Indiana.
Mell Barnes is not related to the Barnes family in London Township.

J. C. Harper of Milan bought fire insurance for his drug store. On Sept. 28, 1887. The premium was $20 for a year. The insurance covered his drugs, medicines, notions, perfumery, “and such other articles as are usually kept for sale in a country drug store.” Includes glass jars, bottles, and show cases. Scales, weights, and wire baskets. Two-storey metal roof, brick building occupied by the assured on the south side of Main Street. James Gauntlett and Carlos Allen bought fire insurance for the Masonic Lodge #323. The lodge consisted of a 3-story frame building on the east side of River Street. Mell Barnes was the agent for Insurance Company of North America. The premium was $26 for one year. |

Thompson & Co. bought fire insurance for his stock of clothing, hats, caps, Gent’s furnishings, articles contained in any clothing store, contained in the Blackmer Building situated on the corner of Main and River Streets. There was loss and damage by fire of Dec. 4, 1893. It was adjusted 12-8-1893. There was a payment made to Whitmarsh on 12-12-1893. After that, the amount insured on the policy decreased.
