About Milan Historic Society

Preserving Milan's Past, Inspiring Its Future.

Established in 1972

The Milan Area Historical Society, founded in 1972, is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Milan, Michigan, and its surrounding townships. As stewards of local heritage, we educate the community, collect and safeguard historical artifacts, and maintain cherished landmarks like the Friend Hack House. Through engaging programs, events, and exhibits, we bring Milan’s stories to life, ensuring they inspire and connect future generations. Join us in celebrating our past while building a legacy for the future.

The Milan Area Historical Society (MAHS) was founded in 1972 with the mission of preserving Milan’s rich history. Its first major achievement was acquiring and restoring a 1938 Milan Fire Truck, an important piece of the town’s heritage. Early on, the Society expanded its focus to include Milan’s surrounding townships not covered by other historical societies, incorporating York and Augusta Townships in Washtenaw County and London and Milan Townships in Monroe County.

In 1980, the MAHS reached a significant milestone by acquiring the deed to the Friend Hack House, a Victorian-style home built in 1888 by Olive Friend. This achievement was made possible through the efforts of Milan’s police chief, Warren Hale, who advocated for preserving the house as a museum. The home, previously owned by Jim and Daisy Hack and later sold to Owens, Illinois, became a centerpiece of the society’s preservation efforts. Daisy Hack herself attended the deed ceremony, marking a momentous day in the Society’s history.

In 2002, after months of fundraising and hard work, community volunteers saved the Old Milan Fire Barn from destruction. The restored building now stands as a historic landmark at the intersection of Main and County Streets, proudly showcasing its significance to Milan’s history.
