The Friend Hack House: A Step Back in Time

Built in 1888 by Olive Friend using funds from a notorious New York stock exchange scandal, the Hack House is one of Milan’s most treasured historical landmarks. This stunning Victorian home—once occupied by Jim and Daisy Hack—features original carpets, wallpaper, pocket doors, and handcrafted built-ins that have been lovingly preserved for over a century. Today, it serves as the Milan Area Historical Society’s working museum, offering visitors a glimpse into 19th-century life in small-town Michigan.

As you explore the Hack House, you’ll encounter room after room filled with carefully curated artifacts, local memorabilia, and period furnishings that tell the story of Milan’s past. From the parlor to the dining room, each space feels like a living time capsule, complete with exhibits like spinning wheels, a historic classroom setup, vintage clothing, and even a charming collection of “creepy dolls.” The adjacent barns and outbuildings house agricultural tools, a vintage windmill, and other pieces that reflect the area’s rural heritage.

More than just a museum, the Hack House is a place of connection—where school groups, families, and history lovers gather to learn, reflect, and celebrate Milan’s story. Whether you're attending one of our seasonal events, participating in a tour, or simply strolling the grounds, the Hack House offers an unforgettable experience rooted in community pride and historical preservation. We invite you to visit, explore, and become part of the continuing legacy of this remarkable home.
